Chakra 2012.02 (Archimedes)

Posted: February 5, 2012 in Chakra

After working on KDE 4.8.0 for a good 2 1/2 months, bug-fixing with KDE and the last few weeks without KDE, it looks KDE 4.8.0 is almost ready to move to stable. That move will only happen if we can get a solid ISO out as this first release of Archimedes.

From now on, the names used tied to a major KDE release are based on famous engineers, so the start is with what most consider one of the earliest engineers, Archimedes.

The first test ISO is up, CD version, x86_64 (more will follow today and tomorrow), and as always, we need the help of all in the test-squad to find as many issues as possible, and let us know, when you all think an ISO is good. This first one does not have the correct release notes yet, it is not fully decided what apps will go on the DVD, so it still needs adjusting for that.

What needs extra attention:
– Marble, the biggest obstacle in getting KDE 4.8 ready (marble tests are done in Tribe too)
– GRUB2, this is the first ISO switched to it, make sure any other OS is detected correctly
– nvidia non-free, check with as many apps as possible, we need to make sure the used driver is stable enough
– hibernate/suspend on catalyst non-free, see if it is compatible with linux 3.2.2
– fstab created on new install, check if new filesystem package fixed the /tmp creation issue
– the omission of broadcom-wl (in-kernel drivers should work now)

    It will be the next stable release of Chakra. We just fix last bugs and our theme and we are ready to go. It is a live-media. Just download it – pop it into your drive and start up your box. Might solve your problems. Only you can tell.

  2. YFDogan says:

    I downloaded it and allready tried it as live session. But the browsers needed the flashplugin. Live media is not available for download plugins i think. Isnt it?

    But it was really stable and fast. Good job.

  3. philmchakra says:

    You can install anything on live-mode. press F12 to get yakuake slide down and enter:

    sudo pacman -Syy
    sudo pacman -S flashplugin

    password is “live” btw.

  4. YFDogan says:

    Hi Phil.
    I downloaded the iso from your blog and tried it as live media. And installed the flashplugin as you told me. Unfortunately it was the same. Flash applications were running piece by piece again and very slowly. How did they solved this problem with Fedora and why is not in Chakra?

  5. YFDogan says:

    Hi
    How can i upgrade my system to Chakra Archimedes? İ activates the testing repository. And:
    sudo pacman -Syy
    sudo pacman -Syu

    But it didnt worked? What should I do?
    Thanks.

  6. philmchakra says:

    For testing your pacman.conf should look like this:

    [testing]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    [core]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    [platform]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    [desktop]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    [apps]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    [games]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    [unstable]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    By adding:

    [development]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

    On top of all you get also my latest updates I’m working on. This is not needed if you want pure Archimedes.

    A normal -Syy output should look like this:

    [phil@chakra-pc config]$ sudo pacman -Syy
    Passwort:
    :: Synchronisiere Paketdatenbanken…
    development 3,4K 2,4M/s 00:00:00 [####] 100%
    testing 111,8K 91,7K/s 00:00:01 [####] 100%
    core 51,7K 63,1K/s 00:00:01 [####] 100%
    platform 181,1K 119,1K/s 00:00:02 [####] 100%
    desktop 92,0K 84,2K/s 00:00:01 [####] 100%
    apps 109,9K 90,4K/s 00:00:01 [####] 100%
    games 32,2K 43,8K/s 00:00:01 [####] 100%
    unstable 4,4K 18,4K/s 00:00:00 [####] 100%
    [phil@chakra-pc config]$

    Then you can update as normal …

  7. YFDogan says:

    I couldn t upgrade and decided to install and installed the Chakra Archimedes today. İt is really stable and fast working. I installed the libgl and bumblebee packages for nvidia. The temperature is still high : 67 Celsius. İs this normal?

    When i switch off the telepathy,it doesnt put it to the system tray. İs there a way for show the icon on system tray?

  9. YFDGAN says:

    Hello Phil,
    I have installed my most coomon packages into chakra and jut now i want to create my own Chakra image including all my packages. We did it before when I was using Pardus. Is this possible with Chakra?

  10. philmchakra says:

    Yes it is possible to create a custom Chakra-Install-Media using chakra-live:

    http://chakra-linux.org/wiki/index.php/Chakra-Live

    Edit the packages files to your liking and run sudo ./build.sh

  11. YFDogan says:

    https://github.com/alierkanimrek/paso/downloads

    Here you can reach the source codes of PASO2. İt is very usefull and easy to create your own iso image. May be , make some different changes it can be used with Chakra too. We discuss about this here http://opensource-tr.org/destek/thread-707.html and decided to give a knowledge to developers of Chakra.
    Regards.

  12. YFDogan says:

    By the way, with Paso, we built only the iso image including the packages that we installed. We discuss and thought about it with the other Chakra users. Such like a package like Paso, if it can be developed also including the configurations of the desktop. that will be really greate.

  13. cumali says:

    Hi phil

    PASO2 application useful

  14. hsngrms says:

    According to YFDogan & cumali,
    I think Chakra needs a utility like RemasterSys
